Political disagreement leads to assault charge in New Jersey

It seems that there is a great deal of disagreement in today's political climate. And though many people in New Jersey feel passionate about their beliefs, discussions rarely result in physical altercations. Despite this, police have now accused a teenager of assault following an incident at a grocery store.

The incident reportedly happened one afternoon on a day in late February. The alleged victim, an 81-year-old man, had reportedly finished his shopping and was exiting the store with a cart of groceries. Police claim that as he was doing so, he was approached by a 19-year-old male.

The two allegedly become involved in an argument over the hat the older man was wearing that reportedly bore a political slogan. The older man claims that as he was attempting to walk away from the confrontation, the younger man grabbed for the hat. In the ensuing struggle, the older man's groceries were knocked over, and he fell to the ground. Police claim that he suffered minor injuries.

In addition to the assault charge, the teenager is also charged with harassment. Law enforcement officials are asking anyone who may have witnessed the incident to come forward. In the meantime, the young New Jersey man will have several important choices to make -- choices that could ultimately impact the rest of his life. Often, people who face criminal charges feel unprepared to make these decisions on their own, prompting them to seek advice from an experienced criminal defense attorney who can ensure that defendants fully understand the options available to them, allowing them to make informed decisions.
