Charge upgraded in New Jersey assault case

Most people in New Jersey have encountered someone while waiting in line who has annoyed them. As it is usually a temporary situation, most people ignore it and move on about their business. However, police claim that a woman at a gas station asked two teenagers to stop a behavior she apparently found annoying, allegedly sparking an incident that led to assault charges against the teens.

The incident happened after midnight on a day in mid-November. According to reports, an 18-year-old and 19-year-old were standing in line with others. Reports indicate that another woman in line noticed that they used profanity "multiple times" and asked them to stop talking like that.

Police say that one of the teenagers began speaking louder, climbed on the store's counter and began spitting at the woman.  The other teen is said to have verbally assaulted the woman before she allegedly knocked the woman over and punched her in the head and face. The two teenagers were arrested, suspected of simple assault. However, footage of the incident posted on social media has reportedly prompted an upgrade of charges for one of the teenagers to aggravated assault; it is unclear why police did not have access to this footage in the immediate aftermath of the altercation.

Unfortunately, the alleged assault has now left two teenagers facing decisions that will ultimately impact the rest of their lives. Most people in New Jersey without legal training feel unprepared to make these decisions on their own. Fortunately, there are experienced professionals who can help guide them through the process, ensuring that they are fully informed about their options and the potential consequences of each.
