New Jersey ATV crash leads to DWI charge

It seems that a person who works as a law enforcement officer faces a great deal of scrutiny if he or she is believed to have been involved in a crime. Often, it may even seem that this scrutiny is an attempt to prove fairness. However, many of the details regarding a recent incident that led to DWI charges against a New Jersey police officer are unclear.

The incident that led to the man's arrest reportedly happened on a day in mid-September. According to reports, an ATV was discovered overturned at an intersection. A passenger on the ATV, whose identity has not been released, reportedly suffered several injuries and was transported to the hospital. A 37-year-old man reported that he was driving. Though he passed a field sobriety test, he was issued several summonses.

However, prosecutors say that the man who accepted responsibility was not the one driving and have since accused a 36-year-old police officer of driving the ATV at the time of the crash. It is unclear what led prosecutors to this belief or what evidence supports the claims. The younger man now faces multiple charges, including assault by auto for driving while intoxicated and causing serious bodily injury, driving an ATV on a public road and reckless driving, among others. The man who claimed to have been driving has been charged with hindering apprehension and prosecution.

The police officer has since been suspended without pay. Following the DWI and other charges against him, he is left facing multiple decisions. Often, people in New Jersey who are facing such accusations want someone with experience with such cases and who is willing to fight on their behalf by their side as they respond to criminal charges.
