Former New Jersey police chief charged with violent crime

One of the state's police chiefs has come under fire for alleged misconduct while responding to a call. The man represented the New Jersey township of Bordentown and recently retired. An incident in which an arrest turned violent has led to charges of excessive force and hate crimes. The violent crime has the small suburb reeling from the news.

A charge such as this can come with penalties of up to 20 years in prison for the former police official. Federal officials have become involved, and the FBI arrested the man for actions he allegedly committed during a Sept. 2016 arrest. He had been working as a police officer since 1983.

In the Sept. 2016 arrest, the man was called to the scene of an alleged crime in which two African-American individuals had reportedly tried to skip out on a hotel bill. When one individual was already handcuffed, the police chief supposedly slammed the individual's head against a metal door frame. He was allegedly also recorded by another officer saying racist remarks and making threats against African-Americans.

As terrible as the charges against the New Jersey man sound, he is allowed due process under the law, and he is also considered innocent until proved guilty. The FBI will be responsible for proving the case, and the man is likely preparing a defense against charges of hate crimes and the violent crime of deprivation of rights by using excessive force. Other individuals in New Jersey facing criminal charges for similar crimes may be wondering how to approach their defense. A criminal defense attorney may be a potential guide to aid individuals through the process.
