New Jersey officials caution risk of holiday drunk driving

As the country looks to celebrate the birth of our nation, some Americans may be inclined to celebrate a little too much. Summer holidays in New Jersey are occasions marked with fun, family, food and festivals. While people gather to barbeque, play games, and enjoy the sun and sand, consuming too much alcohol and then getting behind the wheel can be a deadly risk.

In Somerville, many residents will be enjoying picnics, parades and impressive displays of fireworks.

County prosecutors and state troopers will be vigilant during the holiday weekend. Their attempts are to keep the roads safe for the families during celebrations. According to one spokesperson for the office of the prosecutor, people are encouraged to stay within the legal limit of blood alcohol level to avoid being stopped by law enforcement. The recent campaign to stay "sober or get pulled over" has been in effect and will be intensified over the holiday weekend.

The data is sobering. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration reported two years ago that over 10,000 people were victims of drunk driving in the nation, and up to one third represented fatalities. Independence Day data has raised that number even higher. Additional data from the NHTSA shows that the Fourth of July holiday period is especially deadly with incidents involving impaired motorists.

If you live in New Jersey, drunk driving charges can be serious. The consequences can be not only life-threatening for you, but also for your children, and other motorists on the road. You can serve jail time, lose your license and pay exorbitant penalties. If you are stopped and your blood alcohol level exceeds the state limit, you may have recourse to people that can help defend you. Sometimes breath tests are not reliable or other measures are not performed correctly. Seek assistance from a seasoned party who can help you safeguard your future and that of your family as you celebrate holidays and festive occasions.
