New Jersey drug arrest could result in 20 years of imprisonment

A 22-year-old man has pled guilty to an alleged plot to burglarize a pharmacy and then sell the stolen prescription medications.  It is claimed that this individual and co-conspirators stole 6,600 doses of medication.  They supposedly did this by filling up 17 garbage bags and two cardboard boxes with methylphenidate, hydromorphone, Opana and oxycodone worth $350,000.

Though sentencing has not yet taken place, this individual is facing a possible jail time of 20 years and a $1 million fine.  The sentencing hearing is scheduled for December 3rd.

While the federal attorney in this case has released court documents regarding the allegations in this matter, it's impossible to know precisely why a guilty plea was elicited. Individuals charged with drug crimes do not always know what legal options that they have available. In certain circumstances they may not feel that they have any other option but to plead guilty in an effort to cooperate with the prosecuting attorneys.

Since the stakes are so high in federal drug conspiracy cases, it is always recommended that individuals charged with drug crimes speak to an experienced criminal defense attorney before agreeing to any plea deal. These attorneys can give individuals charged a better idea whether it would or would not be advisable to fight the charges. In certain circumstances, such attorneys can also negotiate with prosecuting attorneys and see if a lesser sentence can be handed down. Finally, attorneys can determine whether the investigation or the arrest was performed properly, and whether the evidence in the possession of prosecutors could really be used in court.
