Jersey City manhunt ends, defendant turns himself in

When Jersey City law enforcement officers approached a parked car near the Booker T. Washington Housing Complex, they discovered an unconscious man in the back seat. He had apparently been the victim of a gunshot to the head.

The officers extricated the man from his vehicle and attempted CPR until emergency medical services arrived on the scene. The man was taken to Jersey City Medical Center, where his condition was listed as critical. He was pronounced dead the next day.

Investigators claimed the decedent had been shot while he was inside the car in the complex near Freemont and Colden Streets. Allegedly, friends of the 21 year-old-man had taken him to the West District.

The Hudson County Prosecutor's Office issued a statement that they would be undertaking a search for the person believed to have committed the murder. The man they were looking for was someone who had prior arrests.

The 24-year-old, Jersey City man surrendered to police with his attorney by his side. He now faces a murder charge for the fatal shooting.

This development ends the weekend hunt for a man police considered armed and dangerous. The defendant is being held on $1 million dollar bail at Hudson County Jail.

Police revealed that the defendant had been previously involved in a fatal car accident resulting in the death of a 15-year-old boy. He has reportedly also been indicted on conspiracy to commit another killing attributed to gang activity.

The Jersey City Police Department joined forces in the search with the Hudson County Prosecutor's Homicide Unit. The 24-year-old was initially charged with firearms offense, aggravated assault and attempted murder, but when the victim died, the charges were subsequently upgraded to murder. They issued a warrant for his arrest.

Criminal defense charges can range from a traffic violation to harassment to domestic violence. Once a charge has been filed, a defendant deserves the right to assistance in order to mount an appropriate defense of the allegations against him. Anyone facing murder charges has the right to a fair trial with an attorney who can ensure that right is protected.
