Egg Harbor couple plead guilty to drug charges

A couple from Egg Harbor Township in Atlantic City, New Jersey, pleaded guilty to drug and weapons charges following a raid on their home. The husband, 40, pleaded guilty to third-degree charges of drug possession and evading police arrest. He also pleaded guilty to first-degree possession of cocaine with intent to distribute, as well of illegal possession of a weapon used during committing a drug-related crime. If convicted, he could serve up to 18 years in state prison. The prosecution asked that he be ineligible for parole for 10 years of his sentence. He had previously been convicted of aggravated manslaughter.

His wife, 33, pleaded guilty to first-degree possession of cocaine with intent to distribute. The prosecution is seeking seven years in prison for her role in the crimes.

The arrests took place following an ongoing investigation with the Atlantic City Violent Crime Task Force and a "no-knock" search warrant of the couple's home on Robin Road in Egg Harbor Township.

The couple was home at the time law officials arrived at their residence. The husband attempted to resist arrest and reportedly fled to an area of his home where a sawed-off shotgun was located.

Officers seized drug packaging materials, measuring scales, cocaine and heroin packaged in individual bags intended for sale. They found almost three ounces of marijuana, about a half-ounce of heroin and six ounces of cocaine.

They discovered a loaded sawed-off shotgun had illegible serial numbers. On the premises, investigators also found a large-capacity magazine and a loaded Intratec TEC 9 assault weapon.

In criminal defense charges, sentencing varies from case to case. A judge will normally consider a number of mitigating circumstances involved, such as the defendant's criminal history, state guidelines and statutory recommendations on your crime. The kind of sentencing one receives can vary from fines and probation to prison time or community service. A misdemeanor carries less jail time than a felony.

Defendants can benefit from the advice of an experienced New Jersey criminal defense attorney, who can protect his or her client's rights and present a strong defense as the case proceeds through the legal system.
