Alleged drug dealer trial pending

A 34 year-old resident of Detroit has been accused by the Vermont Drug Task Force of dealing heroin over a period of six month from an apartment in Orleans County. The defendant has pleaded not guilty in response to the affidavit filed by the task force, alleging that there was a second person involved. The second man has yet to be apprehended, according to statements by the assistant district attorney.

Police say they had received information from an unnamed source which allowed them to take the heroin dealer into custody after he got off a bus in Plattsburgh. Following a search of his personal property, officers uncovered several drugs, including muscle-relaxants, a half ounce of heroin, and a substance used to dilute the drug.

According to an affidavit, the defendant confessed he was on his fourth trip to Vermont to sell drugs. He admitted he had transported almost two grams of heroin on previous trips, which he then sold in Orleans County. Court documents stated that the man had an extensive criminal record and had been a member of a street gang.

The man had been indicted by a federal jury on charges of drug conspiracy. During his appearance before the magistrate, he was ordered to remain in custody. The defendant reportedly has prior convictions, three of which are felonies. Two warrants have been issued for his arrest on drug charges are pending in another state.

So many drug-related crimes can carry extremely heavy penalties that can affect you for the rest of your life. The consequences can stay with you, affecting your ability to seek housing or employment. If you are facing drug charges or have been arrested for drug offenses, it's important that you take the time to better understand the charges you are facing, your constitutional rights and your legal options.
